Making a return to the franchise as the first character of the latest Street Fighter’s second season of DLC, M. Bison is back once again within a new body following his previous death in SF5. Ever since first appearing as the final boss of Street Fighter 2, M. Bison has maintained the status of one of the most prolific villains of the fighting game genre. In a series that might not be heavy on upfront storytelling over gameplay, this Psycho Power-wielding megalomaniacal dictator’s history encompasses a long-term narrative that has recently led him down an unexpected path.
Sagat served as the end boss of the original Street Fighter, but he was established to just be another member of the Shadaloo organization under M. Bison when SF2 came around. Bison would go on to have his presence thoroughly fleshed out across the Alpha series before being overshadowed by other attempts at villains in later releases, but he’s still around today despite canonically dying on several occasions.

Street Fighter 6 Acknowledges M.Bison's Confusing Name Change
M. Bison recently returned from the dead in Street Fighter 6, and the game features a clever nod to the dark brawler's infamous naming controversy.
M. Bison's Beginnings and Lasting Legacy
The prequel setting of the Alpha series in Street Fighter's timeline expanded on M. Bison’s story by having him play off of the character Rose and her Soul Power abilities, explaining that she used to serve under him when he practiced the same arts. He betrayed and killed his own master once he learned Psycho Power, however, and went on to enact his brutality on many during his ascent to leader of his own organization. Due to the damage his powers caused to his body, he sought to use Ryu’s as a replacement for his soul to fill and nearly succeeded. After that failed, he would be killed by Cammy and the rest of his Dolls, other potential replacement vessels, but he lived on in Rose’s body. M. Bison is also shown to be responsible for key events in major areas of Street Fighter lore, such as being the killer of Charlie Nash.

When Bison first appeared in SF2, this version was canonically a new body that he had taken over to continue his plans. This one is seemingly taken out by Akuma, and Bison doesn’t receive a replacement until the events of SF4. That title introduces Seth, its new main antagonist, a rogue android vessel for Bison who gains free will and sparks conflict over world domination. Properly stepping back into the villain role in Street Fighter 5’s story, Bison’s plan to enhance his Psycho Power with the seven Black Moon satellites is foiled and he is finally killed by Ryu’s Power of Nothingness.

Achieving a Classic Goal, but Not on His Terms
Bison was reduced to a specter following his most recent death, shown haunting Ed, another replacement who was cultivated while inhabiting Rose. Instead of entering a new vessel, however, he has emerged in SF6 as an amnesiac clone of himself with an altered personality. M. Bison's Psycho Power was used to save the life of his new horse companion, Rosinante, in a rare show of compassion, but he still remains cold and violent while having this newfound respect.
He’s shown consuming the original Bison’s specter during his appearance in World Tour mode, so this clone iteration might be here to stay permanently. He ultimately acknowledges that there may be other Bison clones in the world, but has a firm resolve to resume his dictatorial goals as his memories return. It’s unclear if he'll be able to stick to his evil ways in his new life, but M. Bison's Street Fighter 6 incarnation has added layers to his character beyond stereotypical villainy.
